You and your child have received a Youth Court appearance ticket. Please call the Youth Court office at (315) 836-8504 within 5 business days to schedule an intake appointment with your child.
What happens at the intake appointment?
Your child will be interviewed by the Youth Court Director and/or staff to get background information surrounding the incident, which provides an opportunity for your child to provide their side of the story. The Youth Court Director will answer any questions and explain what your child’s hearing will look like. You and your child will sign consent forms and be scheduled for a formal Youth Court hearing to be held at a later date.
What are the benefits of my child’s participation?
By agreeing to proceed in the voluntary diversion Youth Court program, the youth must admit guilt to the offense. The offender has the right to consult an attorney to discuss the advantages of choosing Youth Court. The youth avoids involvement with Family Court and the Jefferson County Probation Department.
At the end of your child’s hearing, they will be given a case disposition, which can include a variety of sanctions.*
*If mandated Youth Court sanctions, your child’s case will be monitored by the Youth Court Director to ensure completion.
